Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré, located on the south coast of the island, is one of its oldest seaside resorts, and today remains a veritable paradise for lovers of the sea and water sports. With its vast stretches of fine sand and consistent waves, this charming village attracts surf enthusiasts of all levels. The lengthy village can also be visited through its winding lanes and alleyways, pleasantly lined with hollyhocks from May to September. It’s the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the daily grind, to relax and unwind, and to take your time. And speaking of taking your time, strap on your backpack and hop on your bike for an enigmatic and thought-provoking discovery of Bois-Plage. Thanks to the Terrà Aventura geocaching application, you can get to know the Bois-Plage and its special features, with family or friends, with a reward at the end, after many fun riddles that will put your senses to the test. It’s another way to visit the island, off the beaten track and using the most virtuous means of transport on the Ile de Ré! Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré is also the village with the biggest seasonal market on the whole of Ile de Ré. From April to September, and during the school vacations, numerous traders come to liven up the market halls and streets of the village, from Place de Lazatte to Rue de Sainte-Marie. It’s a must for lovers of local produce and visitors looking for souvenirs. During the summer season, Bois-Plage is liveliest and most animated in the mornings, to the delight of young and old alike!

LE PONT

The Île de Ré bridge is 3 km long and is open 24/7. It connects La Rochelle to the Île de Ré, on the western coast of France. It was built by Bouygues and financed by the Charente-Maritime It received a déclaration d'utilité publique in 1984, which allowed its construction in the first place, and was inaugurated on May 19, 1988

An "environmental tax" was established in 2012, replacing the old toll, and is attributed to the defence and management of threatened natural areas on the island, and the organisation of clean transport.

As a result, holiday-makers and day-trippers contribute to the preservation of the island’s natural environment - an essential feature of the island’s charm - and where construction is unauthorised on 80% of the land. There is a fee for crossing the bridge with any motorised vehicle including scooters over 50m3, motorbikes, cars, motorhomes, buses and heavy vehicles. The toll gate is on the mainland in the small town of Le Belvédère. The return crossing is free and there is no toll gate

The toll in high season (late June to mid September) is €16 and low season €8

LE BOIS-PLAGE-EN-RÉ

Peu des Aumonts, in Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré, is the highest point on the Ile de Ré at a staggering 19m above sea level! Take a stroll through the long streets of the village, and you'll discover the historic traces of the farming activities that once thrived here. There are the beautiful façades of the wine-growers' houses, two or three storeys high, with their large and easily recognisable carriage gates. As a result, the Wine-Growers' Cooperative was set up here in 1951. Grain milling was once an active practice here as well

Of the twelve mills from the last century, only one remains, the Moulin de Bel-Air - its tower and blades are still visible for miles around

Le Bois-Plage is twinned with Lazzate, Itlay, whose wind band recently visited and held a joint concert with Les Banda'loups, the local fanfare (wind band)

LA TOUR MALAKOFF

Clearly seen from our garden, this residence was built by the archaeologist and historian Théodore Phelippot, in 1854

Its originality lies in its belvedere and a belvedere, from the Italian for "beautiful view", is an architectural structure sited to take advantage of a fine or scenic view. The term has been used both for rooms in the upper part of a building or structures on the roof, or a separate pavilion in a garden or park. The actual structure can be of any form or style, including a turret, a cupola, or an open gallery

The access to the belvedere of La Tour Malakoff is by a spiral staircase of 54 steps. This scholar, collector of antiquities and rare objects originally turned it into a museum. but it is now a private dwelling and cannot be visited.

The walls, which originally surrounded the estate, are the same walls that line most our garden and are supported by the odd-looking roundels.

BICYCLES

As the island is almost flat, cycling is the best way to see the island. There are cycling tracks everywhere (beware: some main roads forbid them) and we have a variety of bikes at the house, but there are plenty of cycle hire shops in our village
